This article discusses the various management approaches and highlights treatment strategies for overcoming potential complications. This refers to a pulp that has mild inflammation due to pulpal irritation that is capable of healing and returning to a clinically normal pulp if appropriate treatment therapy is performed. Root canal treatment of teeth with pulpal obliteration is often challenging. The inevitable lack of responses to normal sensibility tests and the crown discoloration add uncertainty to the management however, only approximately 7–27% of teeth with PCO will develop pulp necrosis with radiographic signs of periapical disease. Glide path is the key to infection control in RCT, but in clinical practice, root canals are often blocked due to pulp calcification, which makes accessing and cleaning the root canal system more difficult. These teeth provide an endodontic treatment challenge the critical management decision being whether to treat these teeth endodontically immediately upon detection of the pulpal obliteration or to wait until symptoms or signs of pulp and or periapical disease occur. Since those are common and known to all dentists I will not touch on those causes. The most common that dentists see everyday all day is local trauma or natural aging. Approximately 4–24% of traumatized teeth develop varying degrees of pulpal obliteration that is characterized by the apparent loss of the pulp space radiographically and a yellow discoloration of the clinical crown. There are several reasons that a pulp chamber will have calcification. Summary Pulp canal obliteration (PCO) occurs commonly following traumatic injuries to teeth. It does not store any personal data.Pulp canal obliteration (PCO) is a frequent finding associated with pulpal revascularization after luxation injuries of. Calcific metamorphosis is the partial or complete obliteration of the pulp following dental trauma. AbstractĪim To review the literature on pulp chamber and root canal obliteration in anterior teeth and to establish a clear protocol for managing teeth with fine, tortuous canal systems. International Endodontic Journal, 45, 177–197, 2012. Pulp canal obliteration (PCO) or calcific metamorphosis is a common occurrence following dental trauma, especially in teeth with open immature apices. Dental trauma to the permanent dentition can lead to clinical complications. In all instances, pulpal obliteration to some degree is described however, the rate and extent of pulpal obliteration in the mature dentition seem greater than those occurring in the immature dentition. Pulp canal obliteration occurs commonly following traumatic injuries to teeth. Ledermix (Lederle Pharmaceuticals, Wolfratshausen, Germany) is a corticosteroid-antibiotic paste. Pulpal obliteration was assessed by radiographic records. GOODIS, in Cohens Pathways of the Pulp (Tenth Edition), 2011. Pulp canal obliteration: an endodontic diagnosis and treatment challenge. Three case reports of patients on long-term GCS therapy are presented.
